Merseyside Police says it has received a number of reports of cats being attacked and killed in Maghull in the past three years.
Incidents have been reported in the Windermere Drive area in which cats have been harmed and some killed.
Inspector of Community Policing, Ian Jones said: “It is completely unacceptable that cats have been attacked in this way, it is clearly distressing for owners and extremely cruel to harm a defenceless animal.
“We have been working alongside the RSPCA and will carry out high visibility patrols in the area.
“We would appeal to anyone with any further information on similar incidents to come forward and help us put a stop to this senseless behaviour.”
