Murder investigation launched after woman dies of head injury

A murder investigation in underway following the death of an elderly woman in Woolwich.

Police were called at approximately at 6:40am on Sunday, 1 July to Elmdene Road, SE18 following reports of a disturbance. Officers and the London Ambulance Service attended.

A 72-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:37am.

Formal identification has taken place and she can now be named as Shuren Ma from Woolwich.

A post-mortem examination carried out at Greenwich Mortuary on Wednesday, 4 July gave the cause of death as a head injury.

A man, also aged in his early 70s, was taken to an east London hospital with stab injuries. He remains in a serious but stable condition.

The Homicide and Major Crime Command are investigating.

The injured man – who was present at the address when the woman died – will be questioned in due course. There have been no arrests.

At this stage, officers are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident. Enquiries continue.
