Officers from the Met’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit are appealing for witnesses following a fatal collision in Beckton.
Police were called at 12:11pm on Monday (12 March) to reports of a road traffic collision involving four vehicles at Royal Docks Road, junction with Claps Gate Lane, near McDonald’s restaurant, E6.
Officers, London Fire Brigade, London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance attended. The driver of a black Audi A3, a 31 year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Next of kin have been informed and formal identification has taken place – the deceased is Gassan Balkot, 31, from the Ilford area.
A post-mortem examination will be scheduled in due course.
The Audi A3 was involved in a collision with three stationary vehicles – a car and two lorries – waiting at red traffic lights approaching the box junction near McDonald’s.
The drivers all stopped at the scene to assist police with their enquiries.
One was taken to an east London hospital with minor injuries and has since been discharged.
There have been no arrests.
Detective Sergeant Mark Palmer, investigating the incident, said: “This collision took place at a busy junction in Beckton, close to the Royal Docks retail park. We believe there may have been a number of witnesses who either saw what happened or may have some dash cam footage. I urge anyone to come forward to help us piece together the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.”
