Murder investigation following stabbing

A murder investigation has been launched following a stabbing in Hackney.

Police were called by the London Ambulance Service at 11:34pm on Sunday, 28 January to the George Downing Estate, off Cazenove Road in Stoke Newington following reports of a stabbing.

Officers attended and found a 26-year-old man suffering from stab injuries.

He was taken to an east London hospital where he was pronounced dead at 12:32am. His next of kin are aware.

A post-mortem examination is expected to be held tomorrow, Tuesday, 30 January. Formal identification awaits.

Detectives from the Met’s Homicide and Major Crime Command are investigating.

Detective Chief Inspector Gary Holmes, who leads the investigation, said: “This is a tragic incident which has led to a young man losing his life.

“At this early stage we retain an open mind as to motive and several lines of inquiry are ongoing. I am appealing to anyone who was in the area of the George Downing Estate around the time of the incident to come forward, even the information you have seems insignificant, as this may prove vital in piecing the events of this incident together.”

No arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing.
